Even as the night goes unwillingly and it’s darkness clings to the remaining hours not even the fumbling fingers of an old man on a keyboard can withstand lightnesses early arrival. I’ll pay for this later I tell myself but laying claim to these early morning routines allows me the tranquility that only me, the birds, and a few moist worms can enjoy alone for our reprieve.
I have had a hint at the news while waiting for the water to boil for the coffee and I won’t be turning that back on. One of my tasks that awaits me is how to disconnect cable while keeping my landline phone and the internet.
Hope springs eternal is still the mantra with the weather though compared to other parts of our country we really don’t have anything to complain about. Playing with fonts and opening size letters are all I can do to keep my fingers moving. Where did the Tiger go that I had planned to feature in this article. Let me go try and find him.
If you skim through any digital news site, msnbc, msn, cnn. there are multiple subjects the news media have deemed ‘newsworthy’. The key to perusing all of these subjects is the ability to learn to ‘pick the meat’ and leave the bones. More often then not, I do not read the article itself but merely the headlines. Time is of an essence when you research as much as I do. I stay away from ‘slide-news’ which has you looking at several things before mentioning the article that enticed you to look in the first place. They have a term for it, click-bait.
Recently, I have experimented with avoiding the news entirely. Some is going to seep through anyway but for the most part while I didn’t miss anything, I wasn’t enlightened by it either.
While unrealistic when Tony and Frank, and now a whole assortment of singers, sang it. Now, it’s almost in reach. Predictions are there will be private citizens flying to the moon before the year is out. Preposterous, I know, but the amount of chatter that comes out of people’s mouths these days looms large for our newest Olympic sport, World’s Fastest Motormouth.
In the year 1985, engineers at the University of Wisconsin had a Eureka moment.
They discovered that an element in a sample brought down from the moon in Apollo 17… is packed with tremendous “wealth-creating potential.”
Just one of the elements could fetch up to an estimated $3 million.
Just so you get an idea, one space shuttle payload of the element can power the entire US for a whole year.
The best part is, according to my calculations, there is enough of the element in the lunar topsoil to power the entire world for over 1000 years.
No wonder this element is being called as the holy-grail of energy.
“But wait, there’s more.” (Almost sounds like Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny).
I really didn’t intend to launch (pun) into an expose on the next better mouse trap but there it was in my most recent newsletter about things to come. As if we don’t have enough blather about what’s to come here on earth as it is.
Which brings me to Liam Ridalgo. I have never heard of him and yet he is or was the best reliever in baseball last year. You remember last year, don’t you. A schedule that included, what, 34 games, not counting the playoffs. And now the Chicago White Sox have him for one year at $54 million dollars. Are you kidding me? On the other hand the Cubs are continuing there take out the trash campaign and letting players go as fast as they can get rid of them. Bah Humbug. we’ve got an invasion imminently arriving and it’s none of the candidates that you have readily on the tip of your lips and you may actually know them, on a personal level. They could even be the neighbors boy you saw grow up and is now a member of the National Guard. Scary…
On the left you see Lloyd Colbaugh and his wife Nita, in the middle you see Sara Groves holding her daughter Ruby. And then Mary. Shortly after I accepted Jesus Christ as my Saviour, Mary invited me to come down to the education department to attend a Yokefellow meeting. I was hesitant, but I did walk by. Inside the room I saw Mary and about 20 convicts. The next day I told Mary I walked by but did not come in. She asked me what I thought about what I saw. I told her I saw 1 sheep and about 20 wolves.
Most Yokefellow Meetings headed up by Lloyd and other volunteers were held to facilitate and teach about subjects pertaining to the Bible, Christianity and a myriad of other subjects that might come up. They were held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Mom Carter, Nita Colbaugh’s mother (80’s) held a Bible Study on Monday Night. You can see there was ample opportunity for men to learn what it means to live as Christians.
It was out in population, on the yard where a man learned how to apply what he had learned. And in many cases, how much more he had yet to learn. For those who professed Christianity there was definitely a milieu for which to live in. But the Federal Medical Center For Prisoners had other milieu’s of another nature as well. The Bird Man of Alcatraz, Mickey Cohen and all assortment of prisoners of a lesser celebrity of status lived here as well.
My Faith was nourished and tested in many ways throughout the 6 1/2 years that I served from 1971 until 1978. Nor was all my time spent in Springfield. I spent a year in Terre Haute, Indiana and 6 months in the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Throughout my criminal past I would include Ashland, KY., EL Reno, Oklahoma, Marion Prison, Stateville, Menard, Vandalia, Sheridan and St. Charles Boys school. And most notoriously, the Cook County Jail. Each place adding its own embeddedness of institutionalization and what ever other characterization it might hold.
It was from all this that God would change me, I added nothing to the effort other than to obey the lessons He taught. In the Ballad of Jack Thomson there was a slide of several of the volunteers. It was they and many others who filled the prison throughout those nights at Yokefellow meetings and Sunday Night Hymn Sings.’ There presence was invaluable it gave the place some civility it might not otherwise possess.
Mary was a volunteer and sang often in the church services, as an employee she worked in the Education Department’s Learning Center. It was here that I first met her and she told me that God could change my life. Over a few years we became friends and in my heart much more. But anything more was not pursued. It would be foolish on the one hand and frankly at that time a brother/sister in Christ was satisfying in itself.
It is difficult to be that celebrative in these times while our world is torn asunder on many fronts. I can only hope that what Mary said to me, that God could change my life, might also apply to the world with an equal outcome. The End
Was today the first shots on Fort Sumter? Are our politicians leading us into a Civil War? Now in words, but we can’t believe that one side is right and the other wrong without calling one or the other the enemy. You can’t talk out of both sides of your mouth though politicians, so often try. Those very same politicians both left and right that many of you so often propagate GET OUT AND VOTE. So we all are accessories to a system that is going to destroy us on the battlefield of partisanship. I am in my remaining years (75) I pray I don’t live to see the outcome because all that is good and wholesome about this country is going to go down in flames. There are some I believe that call themselves Americans who only live to see that day. The End….Good night.
FB must night like multiple posts or comments because as I was posting comments indicating my withdrawal from FB itself they suspended my account. Thank you very much FB, I got along without you before I met you gonna get alonw without you now.
Was it 1713 that the word lemming was first used, and like a lemming I scrolled, following one headline after another, heading for the ledge of one bizarre screaming headline after another until I stopped at this one 269,269.
What could you imagine that number represents. Children. 269,269 children are homeless in California. I’m not even going to cite the many reasons, whys and wherefores of how that many ended up homeless, Nor am I going to throw fiery darts at anyone. I am remembering a line from “Boys N da Hood” Either they don’t know, don’t show, or don’t care about what’s going on in the hood.
Sure he does, along with 50 Cent, Herschel Walker and Miley Cyrus, I suppose. They along with over 300 million other people have something to say to the American People as well.
I have never had an ego so I don’t know what it is that drives people to continue on even when they can just sit back and cruise on automatic. I saw the other day that Yadier Molina was going to sign on for two more years playing catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. Yadier has played so long I think the first player he threw out at second was Shoeless Joe Jackson of the 1919 Chicago White Sox. Give it up man, we know its not the money and ‘as they say’ you can’t take it with you. Or can you? I suppose you could pile it in your casket to keep other people from having it.
I don’t have anything to say to the American People or any other people for that matter. Go on with you bad self and bippitty bop down Broadway. I carry on and get out of life just about what I put into it. I have put aside most things that require an over abundance of ambition, writing, making money on the internet, anything that has anything to do with learning something new. I do pay attention to money, making sure we live within the boundaries of our means.
I have grandchildren and they like no other keep me interested in living and watching them grow. I do worry that they are not going to understand this time we are living in. Heck, I don’t even understand. Geeeze, some of these people…where did they come from. Well, just leave it alone and keep on keeping on. Hang in their folks the best way you know how. We will definitely not look back on these times and laugh about it. I guess I had a little something to say to the American people after all.
Why? Just because. That’s all you need to know. There’s a whole lot more to tell you about but it isn’t necessary that you hear it all. Unless. You really want to know.
I started my day in anticipation of a sweltering, broiling, ratcheted up heat wave. So I hurried to my porch. grabbed my books and pulled down the sun screen. “Would you like a cup of coffee?” My thoughtful wife asked me. “Please?” I replied.
I have way to much to untangle today and where to start is anybodies guess. I told myself last night, after discovering that I’ve had this ‘bought and paid for’ course in setting up a Word Press Website, that I needed to finish setting up the website that I already have. Then there’s the writing course that I have from Great Courses (on video) that has been collecting dust for awhile now. Okay, and what about your manuscript that you shelved after printing our several copies that needs a re-draft/re-write now that your studying How To Write Great Sentences.?
What about Artificial Intelligence and Robots and Automation and Abraham Lincoln and John Perkins (whose children I knew and worked with by the way) All books that I am reading currently. It’s 10:35 am, I best get back out on that porch before the sun comes down on me like a Elton John song.
